Samoa was originally discovered and settled by the Lapita people around 3,500 years ago. The independent South Pacific nation consists of seven islands which collectively cover an area of 1,200 square miles. Samoa has a population of about 60,000 people and the one and only city is its capital, Apia. Samoa is known for its staple products of copra (dried coconut meat), cocoa beans and bananas. The islands’ thick forests have many different kinds of trees, including sixteen types of coconut palm and twenty varieties of breadfruit.
